Title

Body

INITIATOR:

DEPARTMENT:

Steven Cohoon, P.E., County Engineer

Office of the County Engineer

DESCRIPTION/BACKGROUND:

This is a request to approve the Preliminary Engineering Report (PER) for SW 27th Avenue (CR 475A) Improvements - Task B. Specifically, Task B concerns the improvements associated with the SW 27th Avenue (CR 475A) at SW 66th Street intersection. A separate PER is being prepared for Task A, the roadway section of SW 27th Avenue (CR 475A) from 0.70 miles north of SW 66th Street to SW 42nd Street, and will be submitted for approval at a future date.

The PER for Task B was presented to the Board at a workshop on July 7, 2026. On August 13, 2026, a community meeting, with a presentation, was held at Trinity Catholic High School for the public to attend.

Three (3) intersection alternatives were evaluated: 1. a modified signalized intersection, 2. a single lane roundabout, and 3. a multi-lane roundabout. The multi-lane roundabout is the preferred alternative based on having fewer fatal/injury crashes and total crashes over the life cycle of the project and having the highest benefit/cost ratio. Other considerations for this preferred alternative included meeting traffic capacity in the design year (2048), estimated construction costs, and right-of-way (ROW) impacts. The PER considered factors such as safety, drainage, existing and future traffic conditions and needs, costs, ROW impacts, and public involvement feedback.

Funding for the design and ROW acquisition phases has been carried forward from the FY 2025-26 budget. The design will be finalized, and the ROW acquisition will begin after the Board’s adoption of the PER. Funding for the construction phase is in the FY 2026-27 budget and is anticipated to begin immediately upon completion of the ROW acquisition.

BUDGET/IMPACT:

None
