DESCRIPTION/BACKGROUND:
Fire Rescue, which oversees the Medical Examiner’s Fund and coordinates with Medicus Forensics, P.A., applied for the Forensic Investigative Genetic Genealogy (FIGG) Grant Program through the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE). Funding was awarded to support DNA sample processing, and the Agreement for State Financial Assistance between FDLE and the District 5 and 24 Medical Examiner’s Office was presented on the agenda for the September 3, 2025, board meeting (Item 7.3.1). A budget amendment is being processed to recognize the grant revenue and appropriate expenditures for lab fees.
This is a non-recurring, one-time award. Future grants will be incorporated into the budget only after an executed contract is received and a corresponding budget amendment is approved. Although the award was received past the original deadline, FDLE extended the grant period through June 30, 2026, which remains within the current fiscal year.
