DESCRIPTION/BACKGROUND:
For the past three years, Marion County has provided grant funding to support animal services through three local organizations: Humane Society of Marion County, Inc., Sheltering Hands, Inc., and Voices of Change Animal League, Inc. (VOCAL). These services include Spay and Neuter surgeries, vaccinations and micro-chipping. This grant funding has also been incorporated into the FY 2026-27 proposed budget for Animal Services.
Humane Society of Marion County, Inc., is a non-profit shelter dedicated to caring for and protecting animals in Marion County. They have been serving homeless and neglected animals for over 60 years. Since January 2026, a total of 482 surgeries have been performed.
Sheltering Hands, Inc is a non-profit low-cost feline spay/neuter clinic and shelter comprised mainly of dedicated volunteers. Their mission is to improve the lives of cats through low-cost spay/neuter services, vaccination clinics, comprehensive adoption programs, community outreach and education and partnerships with organizations striving towards the same goal. As of the end of June, 406 community cats have been spayed/neutered, vaccinated and ear tipped. The remaining funds should be exhausted by the end of July.
VOCAL’s mission is to solve the homeless pet problem through prevention, community outreach, adoption and collaboration. VOCAL’s Community Clinic and Resource Center stands ready to provide practical support to “good Samaritans” who find stray animals and take them into their home and off the street. To date, VOCAL has completed 489 surgeries through the grant.
