Budget Transfer from Fire, Rescue and EMS Fund to Insurance Fund - $370

INITIATOR:                                                                                                                              DEPARTMENT:

James Banta, Fire Chief                                                                                    Fire Rescue

DESCRIPTION/BACKGROUND:

Pursuant to Florida Statute 112.1816, firefighters may elect to receive a one-time $25,000 lump sum payment in lieu of filing a Workers' Compensation claim for firefighter cancer claims. To be eligible, firefighters must meet specific statutory requirements.

Marion County Board of County Commissioners (BCC) adopted Policy 24-01 to extend benefits, upon executing the appropriate release, to Firefighters who otherwise would not be entitled to the statutory benefits.

On the November 5, 2024 agenda (Item 5.1.1), the BCC approved four such claims. However, additional out-of-pocket expenses totaling $370 were identified for one of the claims. To cover these costs, a one-time transfer of funds from the Fire, Rescue and EMS Fund to the Insurance Fund is necessary.

BUDGET/IMPACT:

Increase Insurance Fund appropriation by $370.
