DESCRIPTION/BACKGROUND:
Local Girl Scout, Christina Hernandez, has earned the Girl Scout Medal of Honor. This is a national lifesaving award for registered Girl Scouts who have saved or attempted to save a life without risk to the candidate’s own life. She was officially presented with this award on April 25, 2026. Below is a detailed description of Christina’s heroic actions.
Christina was visiting her grandfather and quickly noticed that something was wrong with her grandfather. She looked up the signs of a stroke and checked her grandfather’s symptoms. He was not showing all signs of a stroke and did not want to go to the hospital. Christina stayed by his side for the next 2 hours, monitoring his symptoms by making sure he was drinking water, didn’t fall asleep, and did not have a fever. When he started to slur his speech and his words were not making sense and he was mumbling, Christina immediately called 911. She remained calm, spoke with the operator, and provided all the necessary information.
When EMT arrived, it took four paramedics and fire rescue team members to safely transfer her grandfather to the gurney and into the ambulance due to his size. At the hospital, tests revealed that his blood sugar was just over 600. The doctor’s told the family that if Christina had not stayed with him and kept him awake, he would have slipped into a diabetic coma if he had fallen asleep, which could have been fatal. Due to Christina’s attentiveness and refusal to ignore the warning signs, he received medical attention just in time. Chirstina’s actions saved her grandfather’s life.
Girl Scouts of the USA has awarded Christina the Girl Scout Medal of Honor for her actions. Christina is now working towards her Gold Award which will focus on diabetes education and informing her peers and community of the signs of diabetic comas and how to help those affected.
