DESCRIPTION/BACKGROUND:

As directed by the Board, Marion County Fire Rescue (MCFR) continues to innovate various methods to balance workload of transport units while striving to be fiscally responsible. One method that provides staffing at a lower cost than staffing at overtime rates is to utilize a Pro Re Nata (PRN) staffing model. The proposed PRN Paramedic and PRN EMT job descriptions will provide an opportunity to hire personnel that are not full-time and thus not eligible for full-time benefits.

Based on the $200,000 in the FY 21/22 budget, these wages provide coverage for approximate 3,250 unit hours. These personnel will be used to staff openings on existing units, staff additional peak load units, or staff special event units. There is an accompanying budget amendment request to move $50,000 in the current budget from Regular Salaries and Wages to Other Wages; this will enable MCFR to begin the process of hiring PRN staff and implementing the program.

BUDGET/IMPACT:

None
