Body

INITIATOR:

DEPARTMENT:

James Banta, Fire Chief

Fire Rescue

DESCRIPTION/BACKGROUND:

Per 112.1816, Florida Statutes, a Firefighter may elect to receive a one (1) time lump sum payout in the amount of $25,000 in lieu of filing a worker's compensation claim for firefighter cancer claims. Employees must meet certain statutory requirements to be deemed eligible to receive said payout.

Marion County has received two (2) presumption claims which meet the statutory requirements for eligibility. These budget amendments are needed to transfer funds out of the Fire, Rescue and EMS Fund to the Insurance Fund to cover two (2) of the one-time lump sum payouts plus the requested out-of-pocket costs for treatment $1,397. The total amount for the BAR is $51,397 for both presumption claims and at this time there are no other eligible claims for payment.

BUDGET/IMPACT:

Increase Insurance Fund appropriation by $51,397.
