DESCRIPTION/BACKGROUND:
The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration ("DEA") has stated that consumption of kratom produces both stimulant effects (in low doses) and sedative effects (in high doses), and can lead to psychotic symptoms, psychological and physiological dependence, addiction, hallucinations, delusion, confusion, nausea, itching, sweating, dry mouth, constipation, increased urination, loss of appetite, anorexia, weight loss, and insomnia, and has labeled kratom a Drug of Concern.
The attached informational memo describes current State-level statutes and administrative regulations related to “Kratom Products,” in case the Board would like to direct staff to address possible local-level regulatory options.
